Victoria Area Parent-2-Parent Resource Network
Welcome to our group in Victoria B.C.! Please come and join us at our monthly parent meetings which will range from themed parent discussions, guest speakers and videoconferencing with guest speakers in Vancouver. We aim to learn from each other and to find out more about caring for our special children -let's navigate the world of rare disease together. New parents always welcome.
This week our discussion topic is: Siblings and Family
Discussion Topic: Siblings and Family
This month we will be having an open discussion regarding the effect on siblings and the family unit while raising a child with a rare disease. Please come to share your experiences and strategies of how to support your other children and ensure there are appropriate coping mechanisms for self-esteem and shaping their perspectives. If your child doesn't have any siblings, we would still like to open the discussion to the wider family unit and the effect on grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins. Here are some helpful resources that have been previously posted: http://www.rarediseasefoundation.org/wiki/sibling_support_resources
As part of this meeting, we would also like to hear your opinion in planning an upcoming "Siblings Day" in Victoria as well as our annual "Family Picnic" in the summer.
Finally, if we have time, we wanted to share a good resource for helpful videos, and can watch this one on advocacy: http://www.actcommunity.ca/education/videos/the-art-of-advocacy/
Light refreshments will be provided at the meeting.
New parents are always welcome. No need to RSVP your attendance, drop-ins are welcome.
